by Julia Alexandra Mee
The talk "A Renaissance Woman on a Mission to Revive the Art of Fresco Painting"⠀
Art historian and fresco painter Julia Alexandra Mee will discuss Isabelle Bonzom's fresco art among a selection of frescoes created by women artists during a talk at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh tomorrow, Tuesday, August 25, 11a.m London time. Julia's talk was broadcast live on Zoom.
Join fresco painter and art historian Julia Alexandra Mee, discussed also her own work in Fresco Painting and her recent commission The Marchmont Mural Cycle at Marchmont House. Julia Alexandra Mee is a professional 'affrescista' (fresco painter) and art historian specialising in traditional mural painting techniques, notably buon fresco and also spirit fresco and its variants. Julia is creating and executing a mural cycle at Marchmont House in Berwickshire, Scotland - 'Home for Makers and Creators', reviving nineteenth century Scottish mural painting techniques whilst incorporating the knowledge of the Italian fifteenth century bottega method.⠀
The fresco painter and art historian Isabelle Bonzom, founder of the organization Pari(s) Affresco and author of "La fresque. Art et technique", employs the technique to paint the « Octopus" fresco, one of a series of frescoes she painted for a private residence in France.
The various stages of the fresco process can be seen here, from the first giornata with the underdrawing through to the final painting.
Adapting the technique to her own method of working, she works on fresh intonaco freehand (without transferring the design), applying the paint in thin transparent glazes which are combined with incisions on the painted surface, creating contemporary frescoes which demonstrate the inherent possibilities this medium offers as a contemporary art form.
I am so pleased to have been asked to participate on a collaborative fresco project in South Carolina with Isabelle, which brings together seven women fresco painters from Europe and the United States. Mico di Arpo from the US is leading the project, and fresco painters include Isabelle Bonzom and Anne Sophie Dumont from France, Patrizia Gioia and Barbara Badetti from Italy, Felice Indindoli from the US and myself from Scotland.
